Spark is pioneering a new and disruptive way for entrepreneurs, especially those without technical expertise, to grow their startups. How does it work? Enterprising founders bring their ideas and business models to Spark, and Spark's team of software engineers build, maintain, manage, and update their product for them, essentially becoming their technical cofounder. The magic comes from the fact that we do this for several companies at the same time, thus generating a robust and vibrant portfolio of startups. By investing our time and resources into many of these high-risk, high-return ventures rather than just one, we minimize the inherent risk involved in startups failing and also maximize our chances of finding the next unicorn. Additionally, we can unlock revenue and cost synergies (such as cross-selling) across our client companies.
How do founders compensate Spark? Spark establishes long-term, equity-based deals with our client companies. This incentivizes us to stay committed to the long-term growth of our clients, and shows them that we are with them throughout their product and company lifecycle. Additionally, due to our "bulk-scale" nature, these equity deals typically lie in the 30-40% range, and are thus cheaper for founders than the 50-50 split typically required to find a technical cofounder. Think of Spark as a venture capital firm; instead of investing money/funding in return for equity, we invest our product engineering and management skills to earn a share of exciting startups.
